The Hodbomont Salons

The Castle of Hodbomont is the home of Academia Libera Mentis. It has become a meeting place for committed independent thinkers, including Edwin Delsing, who initiated a series of Salons. In this beautiful location in the Belgian Ardennes, he regularly gathers groups of intellectuals from throughout Europe to debate the many opportunities for improvement regarding our culture and our freedom.

Salons in French castles have an illustrious history. In the decades before the American and French revolution, the new era was being discussed in the Chateaus of France. These French Salons of the mid-18th century were spectacular affairs protected by the ancient privileges of the Chateaus. They were usually hosted by the Lady of the Castle and saw prominent French thinkers thrash out their ideas with each other on truly important topics: how to reform the country; the position of the King; the rights of the citizens; how to organise the administration of the cities? What seemed politically impossible and naïve was openly advocated and debated.

Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were regular guests at these Salons. What the French intellectuals and their American guests came up with in those 18th century Salons would become the basis for both the French and the American revolution, both borrowing heavily from French thinkers like Montesquieu and Voltaire.

With both Europe and America slipping into darkness once more, we are bringing back the Salon tradition.

During the sixth Hodbomont Salon, on February 28th, 2026, democracy took center stage. More than twenty of us discussed the major flaws of today’s democracy and formulated the major issues to tackle. In the months that followed, a small group (Edwin J.F. Delsing, Paul Frijters, Jasper Mekkes and Steve Van Herreweghe) worked on a joint manifesto. At the seventh Hodbomont Salon, on October 3, 2026, this manifesto was finalised and agreed, giving rise to the Hodbomont Declaration on Democracy. It launches a non-partisan political movement for true democracy.

We see the political leadership of ‘democratically governed countries’ distancing itself from their populations, making leadership into a cult that accumulates power and influence rather than fostering peaceful societies. We want to help lead democratic power back to the smallest scale possible (the individual, the family, the community, the region), which we believe is a natural step in the emancipation of peoples vis-à-vis their governments.

Do you agree? Then you can co-sign the Hodbomont Declaration and become part of our “swarm” that speaks out loud.

Everyone can join the Hodbomont movement. The goal: to work together to develop improvements for society. Join future Hodbomont Salons, initiate new ones yourself, or set up whole new Salon series where you are. Now is the time to talk openly of a better future and how we could get there.

Democracy is dead. We, the people, propose her resurrection.

As concerned citizens, we demand our power back from so-called democratic representatives. They have forgotten that the people are the sovereign and they our servants.

We witness a systematic encroachment on our liberties, caused by extreme concentrations of power that uses propaganda, censorship, and coercion. Our ‘democracy’ has become an illusion in which the res publica (the public interest) is no longer served by the political elite.

This urgent call is a duty to ourselves. The time of top-down impositions is over. It is time to develop new political systems of self-determination that can truly be called democratic.

Our vision:

  1. Democracy protects the fundamental individual rights and freedoms, such as the right to life, conscience, expression, bodily integrity, and property, as well as the freedom to trade and form new communities.
  2. Democratic decision making and rule should emanate from the smallest possible level so as to avoid centralisation – the concentration of top-down power.
  3. Citizens must be able to establish laws, change them, and abolish them by binding referenda which the citizens initiate.
  4. Democracy is the custodian of the shared structure that guarantees the shared values and common interests. She facilitates a peaceful diverse society in which groups and individuals with different values can flourish.
  5. Prominent public functions (like the head of state, judges, mayors, public prosecutors, top public servants) shall be appointed via direct democracy with an imperative mandate: an authorisation that can be retracted by the citizens.

Do you want future generations to grow up in a free world wherein widely shared and conscientious leadership is normal?
Then sign this declaration and join our undertaking to erect a genuine democracy:
